About Kernicterus
What is Kernicterus?
Is Kernicterus preventable?
Kernicterus is a type of brain damage that can result from high levels of bilirubin in a baby's blood. It can cause athetoid cerebral palsy and hearing loss. Kernicterus also causes problems with vision and teeth and sometimes can cause intellectual disabilities.
While it's not possible to prevent every cause of kernicterus, there are steps you can take to lower your child's risk of developing this condition:
- Keep an eye out for any signs of jaundice in your child after birth. Look for yellowing of their skin and, if noticed, promptly contact their healthcare provider.
- Ensure you attend all newborn follow-up appointments, particularly if your child was born prematurely.
- Follow a healthcare provider's advice for treating jaundice. If your child is diagnosed with jaundice, their healthcare professional will provide specific treatment directions.
